Taoiseach Micheál Martin and President Trump conferred in the Oval Office today.
The president did most of the talking, Martin most of the listening.
The meeting did not end in any out and out argument though President Trump did complain a lot about U.S. pharmaceutical companies operating in Ireland and that Ireland had somehow unfairly lured them across the Atlantic.
The meeting came as the U.S. and the European Union set about imposing tariffs on each other. That was not great timing for Martin being, he head of an EU member state government.
Earlier, Mr. Martin met with Vice President J.D. Vance who spoke of the relationship between Ireland and the U.S. as being one of the great alliances.
After the Oval Office meeting, and before the later presentation of the traditional bowl of shamrock to the president, Mr. Martin attended the Speaker's Lunch on Capitol Hill.
Mr. Martin took the opportunity to toast President Trump and invite him to Ireland.
