Back-to-Back Golds

Paul O'Donovan and Fintan McCarthy today became the first Irish competitors to win golds at successive Olympics since Pat O’Callaghan followed up his hammer-throwing title at the 1928 Amsterdam Games with his victory at the Los Angeles Games in 1932.

The pair triumphed in dominant style in the men's lightweight double sculls final in Paris with a time of 6:10.99 to claim their 2024 golds, having won at the delayed Tokyo Olympics three years ago. O’Donovan won silver with his brother Gary in Rio in 2016.

Today’s win follows Daniel Wiffen’s gold medal in swimming earlier this week and the bronzes for Mona McSharry, also in swimming, and for men’s double sculls rowers Philip Doyle and Daire Lynch. Meanwhile, boxer Kellie Harrington is guaranteed at least a bronze medal in the women’s 60kg division.
