The 2024 Brigadier General James Cullen Human Rights Summer Legal Intern, sponsored by Brehon Law Society of NY and KRW Law, LLP., is McKenzie Gallagher of Butte, Montana.
McKenzie is a second year law student at American University Washington College of Law in Washington, D.C.
She attended Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington where she earned a bachelor’s degree in political science.
After graduation from Gonzaga in 2020, McKenzie attended University College Cork (UCC), in Cork City, to purse an LL.M. in International Human Rights Law and Public Policy.
She graduated from UCC in 2021and lived in Cork City until beginning law school. At American University Washington College of Law she is member of the International Law Review and the Human Rights Brief, where she has written about human rights issues in Northern Ireland. Her legal interests are in international human rights law, humanitarian law, and criminal law.
Founded by New York City Brehons lawyers Sean Downes and Jennifer Frankola-Crawford and Belfast based lawyer Niall Murphy in 2016, the summer legal internship was re-named in 2018 in honor of the NYC Brehons first president and champion of human rights, the late Brigadier General Jim Cullen.
Since 2016, the Brehons have selected one American law school based law student to travel to Belfast and work on human rights issues and legacy cases at KRW Law under the supervision of Niall Murphy.
