Manager gets 1st win as Irish come back in Helsinki

The Republic of Ireland had its first competitive comeback win in 11 years with a 2-1 Nations League result over Finland at the Olympic Stadium in Helsinki on Thursday night.

Goals from Liam Scales and Robbie Brady in the second half gave recently-appointed manager Heimir Hallgrimsson his first victory.

An error by captain Nathan Collins gifted the Finns the 17th-minute opener via Joel Pohjanpalo.

The Irish were to lift their game markedly in the second half and got on level terms in the 57th minute when Scales headed in a Brady cross. And in the 88th minute, Festy Elosele beat defenders out on the right wing before crossing to Brady who controlled the ball on the left edge of the 6-yard box and then fired into the roof of the net.
