IBO Marks 50, Bestows Honors

The Irish Business Organization of New York will mark its 50th anniversary with a “Celebration of the Irish in New York” on Tuesday October 24 at the Chelsea Piers overlooking New York Harbor, the first port-of-call for so many of the Irish diaspora. For the past 50 years, said a release, the IBO has welcomed that diaspora, helping them build a sense of community, advancing their business and professional lives, and instilling them with the IBO’s “Network, Communicate, Reciprocate” ethos.

The 50th Anniversary Jubilee Gala will feature a full buffet dinner, extended open bar, live music from the Sean Fleming Band, the Niall O’Leary and Irish dancers, a Poitín tasting courtesy of Smuggling Nun and Copeland Distillery, a Golden Raffle Trip to Ireland, "all against the dramatic, sparkling backdrop of the Hudson River at night."

Emceed by past IBO president Attracta Lyndon and former executive board member Dr. Ciaran Grant, “The Celebration of Ireland in New York” will honor five outstanding organizations "and one stellar individual who have served the New York Irish community in exemplary ways."

The organizations honored will be the United Irish Counties Association which will receive the  Community Leadership Award; the Irish Repertory Theatre, recipient of the Cultural Leadership Award; Glucksman Ireland House, which will be presented with the Distinguished Service to Education Award; the Ireland Funds, recipient of the Distinguished Service in Global Philanthropy Award, and the Bank of Ireland, which will be presented with the Excellence in Financial Services Award.

Mary Burke, who has welcomed more people To Rosie O'Grady's that can ever be counted, will be presented with the Arthur F. Clements Founder's Award for a lifetime of selfless service to the community.

“The IBO plays a vital role in the New York Irish community. Our programs assisting the newest members of our business community, our entrepreneurs, and women in business are more relevant than ever,” IBO president Paul Finnegan said.

“I must thank my amazing Executive Board, our Gala Steering Committee, our members, and sponsors for making our Golden Jubilee year so memorable. We stand on the shoulders of many and look forward to future years of impactful service. Our celebration of Ireland in New York on October 24th, with such a stellar lineup of honorees, is the perfect theme for our Gala.”

Founded in 1973, the IBO provides more than 25 events a year including monthly evening events, monthly business breakfasts, a quarterly women's networkers, and other member events.
