Carroll scores 31 in 77-76 win

John Carroll sank a pair of free throws with just fractions of a second left on the game clock to salt a road victory for Hartford, 77-76, over Maine in men’s basketball on Wednesday, Jan 16. The Dublin senior led all scorers with 22 points, which he achieved on 5-of- 9 shooting from the floor (1-of-3 from L.L. Bean) and 11 of 13 from the foul line. He also garnered seven rebounds. The Hawks then returned home to drop a 76-73 verdict to Mass.-Lowell on Saturday. Carroll poured in a career-high 31 points and brought down 10 boards for his third double-double in America East Conference play this season. He knocked down 12 of 18 shots from the field, including both of his tries from Route 84, and five of nine from the foul line. The Hawks are 9-10 overall and 2-2 in AEC play.

Conor O’Sullivan shot a perfect 3-for-3 from the floor, two of which were from long range, for eight points in Birmingham Southern’s 84-74 loss at home to Centre on Sunday. He is a 6-3 sophomore guard from Tower, Co. Cork. The Panthers are 10-7.


Sean Flood scored nine points and gathered seven rebounds, co-high for his side, in Longwood’s 71-64 road loss to Presbyterian on Saturday. The 6-2 guard from Dublin launched all his attempts from three-point land and converted three of them. He also got credit for two assists. The Lancers dropped to 12-8.



WOMEN'S BASKETBALL


Edel Thornton was a near-perfect six of seven from the floor in Quinnipiac’s 96-55 rout of Niagara on the road Friday. She struck on three of four attempts from the dock of the Maid of the Mist as she posted a season-high 15 points. She is a senior guard from Gurranabraher, Co. Cork. The Bobcats are 11-6 overall and 6-0 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action.


Another double-double for MidAmerica Nazarene’s Whitney Moia in Wednesday's 84-69 road win over Graceland. She knocked down six of nine field goal attempts for 12 points and reeled in 14 caroms. In Saturday’s 68-64 win at home over Culver-Stockton, the 6-3 senior center from Dublin accounted for a team-high 11 rebounds, a game-high six blocks and three steals. The Pioneers are 16-2.



SQUASH


Galway senior Fiona Power contributed mightily to Drexel’s 5-4 win over Cornell in Ithaca, N.Y. on Saturday. She defeated the Big Red’s Lucy Martin at no. 7, 3-1 (13-11, 11-8, 6-11, 11-8).
