Martin O'Neill got off to a good start in his return to the Premier League with Sunderland coming from a goal down to beat Blackburn 2-1 at the Stadium of Light. The win lifted Sunderland out of the relegation zone. Two Irish players were on target at the weekend, Wes Hoolahan for Norwich in their 4-2 win over Newcastle and Steven Reid got West Brom's goal in their 2-1 home defeat to Wigan. One bit of good news for Britain's under pressure Prime Minister Cameron. He is an Aston Villa fan and the Birmigham side beat Bolton 2-1 on Saturday.
Henry honored
I caught a glimpse of Thierry Henry crying on Sky News on Saturday morning when the Frenchman got emotional following the unveiling of statue in his honor outside Arsenal's Emirates Stadium. The Gunners, who are in their 125th year, erected three statutes to former greats: Herbert Chapman, Tony Adams and Henry, who scored a record 226 goals for the North London club.
Arsenal kept up their recent fine form with a 1-0 win over Everton 1-0. The goal came from Robin Van Persie, who is having a great season. On BBC's Saturday afternoon soccer results program former Arsenal player Martin Keown suggested that Arsenal might sign Henry on loan from New York Red Bulls when the transfer window opens in January. Henry is already training with the Gunners.
No change in Scotland where Celtic beat Hearts 1-0 at Parkhead and Dubliner Pat Fenlon saw his Hibernian side lost 2-0 to Rangers at Easter Road.
Nothing but the best
There will be no repeat of "Saipan" for the Boys in Green at Euro 2012. Last week the FAI confirmed that the Irish team will be billeted at the five-star Sheraton Sopot Hotel, in the seaside town of Gdynia close to the city of Gdansk where Ireland play Spain on June 14. The team will train at the nearby Municipal Stadium which has a capacity of 15,000. The Irish squad will take a 30 minute flight to Poznan for the games against Croatia and Italy. Also the FAI is waiting to hear.
