Stephanie Messing
Where do you live? Mahopac, NY.
Current company and position? Culture & Events Officer at the Aisling Irish Community & Cultural Center.
First job and what it taught me? My very first job ever was a day camp counselor at Buchanan Day Camp. This job taught me the importance of punctuality, how to be patient, to be creative, and to be a leader for these younger children.
How do you embrace your Irish heritage? Growing up, food and family gatherings is always what connected me to my Irish roots. I remember when I was younger, in my family it was always very important to sit at the dining room table every evening for dinner, with no distractions. We'd often enjoy meat and cabbage, and every week in the colder months my mom would make a pot of beef stew. Now, as an adult, I am blessed to be working with the Aisling Irish Community & Cultural Center, where I get to immerse in the Irish Culture on a daily basis! I enjoy curating our Cultural Series, a program where I research and design fun, engaging, and educational events that bring the richness of Irish heritage to our community. These events focus on language, history, art, storytelling, music, dance, and film. Through planning these monthly programs, I’ve gained an even greater appreciation for my Irish heritage and traditions.
Something people would be surprised to know about me... As I've spent the last 6 years developing my event manager career, people are often surprised to find that I studied playwriting and screenwriting at SUNY Purchase College. Out of college, I worked for a small production company, where I would write scripts and work with the team to produce advertisements for our clients that were often used for seminars, on webpages, and social media. In college, I also wrote a short play that I was fortunate to produce on campus. I still love writing, and submit articles to local newspapers about events or businesses that I am passionate on supporting.
