Celebrated Northern Irish Olympian Mary Peters will score another first when she headlines the annual Washington D.C. celebration of Nollaig na mBan next Wednesday, 8 January.
Winner of the gold medal in the pentathlon at the ill-fated Munich Olympics of 1972, the Belfast champ will be the guest of the Irish American Partnership which traditionally marks Nollaig na mBan (Women’s Christmas) with an event saluting female leadership.
Lady Mary Peters will share the incredible story of her gold medal win and reflect on her remarkable career which saw her appointed lead representative of the Queen of England in the North of Ireland.
A respected peacemaker and bridge-builder in Northern Ireland, Peters used her high profile to found the Mary Peters Trust which provides funding support for young athletes.
85 young athletes from across NI and representing 24 different sports from basketball and karate to powerchair football, sailing and orienteering have received funding awards from the Mary Peters Trust.
