The USS Patrick Gallagher will sail to Ireland for a courtesy visit at some point in the future.
The 510-feet long Arleigh-Burke class destroyer, named after Navy Cross recipient Patrick Gallagher from County Mayo, was christened in a ceremony at Bath Iron Works in Maine on Saturday, July 27.
The ceremony included the breaking of a bottle of sparkling wine by Patrick's sisters Pauline, Rosemarie and Teresa.
During the christening ceremony Rear Admiral Thomas Anderson said that the ship would visit Ireland once it is commissioned.
It remains in dry dock for final fitting out and the formal ceremony of taking aboard its captain and crew.
