Chorus of Calls to Dump Legacy Legislation

Calls to dump British legacy legislation in the North are growing in tandem with the Irish government's expectation that the universally derided legislation is in the crosshairs of the new British Labor government.

Sinn Féin MLA has called Gerry Kelly called the Act a “cruel piece of legislation”.

“Since the Legacy Act was first introduced, state bodies have continued to hide information from families to cover up the British government’s shameful actions in Ireland and to protect their soldiers and agents," Kelly said.

“The shutting down of legacy inquests and investigations have already had a very real and human impact on families.

“It is welcome that inquests halted by the imposition of the Legacy Act will be resumed and that families who lost loved ones during the conflict will once again have access to the criminal and civil courts.”

Mark Thompson of the victims’ group Relatives For Justice said families should have “maximum disclosure in resumed inquests."

“Whilst this is welcome it nevertheless relates solely to the amnesty provisions of the Tory Legacy Act, which the judgement found to be unlawful when challenged by families,” he said.
