Connecticut Remembers Hunger Striker who Died in English Prison

Irish Northern Aid of Connecticut commemorated the 50th Anniversary of the death of Irish republican hunger striker Michael Gaughan at the Irish Hunger Strikers Memorial located at Bobby Sands Circle in Hartford Connecticut at the weekend.

Brief remarks were followed by prayers led by Father Thomas J. Walsh pastor of the nearby Saint Augustine Church. There was a reading of the final statement of Michael Gaughan before the event concluded with the group singing the Ballad of Michael Gaughan.

Michael Gaughan died on 3 June 1974 in Parkhurst Prison, England, after a lengthy hunger strike aimed at winning his repatriation to Ireland. He was 24-year-old.
