In his first fight since a quick stoppage win at Madison Square Garden on St. Patrick’s Day weekend, “Mighty” Joe Ward pounded Ukrainian Dmytro Fedas into retirement after six rounds at the National Stadium in Dublin last week.
The Westmeath southpaw, who is promoted by New York-based DiBella Entertainment, upped his record to 12-1 [8 KOs] while boosting his light heavyweight credentials. Fedas, who fights out of Prague in the Czech Republic, dropped to 8-7-2 [5 KOs].
Ward was methodical in breaking down the tough Fedas unloading punches on his man with little to worry about in terms of return fire.
“I felt like I was in second gear. I didn’t really get out of it,” he told the media after just his second professional bout on Irish soil.
Fedas took the punishment – in the form of a steady stream of shots to the head and body – until the end of the sixth round when he retired on his stool. There were no knockdowns.
“I want to take on the top guys in the world. I’m here to fight any of them,” Ward told irishboxing.com. “Any of the English guys, Joshua Buatsi, Lyndon Arthur, any of the top guys that are up there that want to take on the challenge to fight me, I’m willing to do it, today, tomorrow, whenever.”
In his Madison Square Garden fight last March, Ward had kayoed the 29-4-1 Derrick Webster in two rounds to continue his impressive ascent in the 175-pound division.
KATIE FIGHT TRAILER
Netflix has released a cinematic style trailer promoting the Katie Taylor-Amanda Serrano rematch at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on Nov. 15. It can be viewed on YouTube.
Taylor, the undisputed super lightweight champion [23-1, 6 KOs], and Serrano, the unified featherweight titlist [47-2-1, 31 KOs], face off for the undisputed super lightweight championship title in the co-main event on the Mike Tyson-Jake Paul card.
The first Taylor-Serrano meeting at Madison Square Garden in April 2022 was one of the biggest events in women’s boxing history.
It was the first-ever women’s fight to headline at the Garden, in front of a sold-out crowd. The bout ended in a narrow split decision in favor of Taylor, and both fighters earned Sports Illustrated’s Fight of the Year and The Ring’s Event of the Year honors for 2022.
