Respect the Role of UN Peacekeepers: Martin

There is an obligation on Israel and Hezbollah to respect the role of UN peacekeepers, Minister for Defence Micheál Martin has said, this as Irish troops in the region continue with their duties during an escalation in violence in Lebanon.

That escalating violence comes against the backdrop of the first anniversary of the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack on Israel that left over 1200 Israelis dead.

Mr. Martin said he is increasingly concerned for Irish peacekeeping troops in Southern Lebanon where 30 Irish soldiers are currently stationed.

He said that over recent days the Israeli Defence Forces have breached the "Blue Line" in several areas – which divides Lebanon from Israel and the Golan Heights – including at the Irish Battalion posts, which he said is an “unacceptable violation of the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701."

Martin said Irish personnel in their outposts are operating under what is known as Level 3, which means remaining in their bunkers.

“Our concern is for all who are impacted by the conflict, but at this moment we are particularly concerned for the welfare of our troops on the ground,” Mr. Martin said.

“I have maintained constant contact with our military leaders and have held discussions with the United Nations and others. I have stressed the absolute need to protect our troops. I want to pay tribute to the bravery, professionalism and resilience of our soldiers.

“Peacekeeping is the most noble act that any person can perform, and our troops are honouring the best traditions of UN peacekeeping.

“In that context there is an obligation on Israel and Hezbollah to respect the role of UN peacekeepers, their mandate, and do nothing that would put peacekeepers and our troops in harm’s way.”

All this comes as Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) have taken up position near an Irish peacekeeping outpost, firing on Hezbollah targets.

President Michael D. Higgins said it was “outrageous” that the IDF has “threatened” UNIFIL peacekeepers. He demanded they walk away from villages in southern Lebanon.

“I am sure that the courage being displayed by our contingent and their colleagues has the thoughts and prayers of all those who value peace, at home and abroad,” Higgins added.
