O'Bradaigh loses on points to Deleon

Sean O'Bradaigh defied the crunching power of Brooklyn banger Carderon Deleon in their three-round SBC Elite 176 pound title match, but came up short on points at the Melrose Ballroom in Queens last Thursday.

O'Bradaigh, ranked #8 nationally at light heavyweight, was making his second bid for the SBC belt. He lost on points to previous champion Adrian Frometa last January. The veteran Frometa in turn was knocked out by the hard hitting 19-year-old DeLeon this June.

Representing NYAC, O'Bradaigh got off to a good start against the knockout artist winning the first round. Then the young champion from Brooklyn’s Gym X started going to the body.

“He won  the second and third [rounds],” said O’Bradaigh. “He slowed me down with body shots – [they] took a lot of wind and energy out of me. His body shots were very powerful.”

Two of O’Bradaigh’s NYAC stablemates, Frenchmen Bastien Martinez and Baptiste Cheval, were also in action on the night.

Martinez lost by unanimous decision in the 132lb #1 contender bout [de facto semi-final] to Michael Algieri, a nephew of former world professional champion Chris Algieri. Cheval meanwhile bagged the 165lb SBC title with a unanimous points decision over Ali Conde.

Bastien, from the Paris region, and Baptiste, from Normandy, both moved to New York to pursue boxing full time. Said O’Bradaigh, a native French speaker through his Belgian mother: “We all got together at the club and the three of us plan on taking over the city.”

As the year winds down, O'Bradaigh, whose honors include the Ring Masters/Golden Gloves middleweight crown and the New York Boxing Tournament Elite light heavyweight title, has two more major events in his sights.Next up are the New York Metropolitan Championships from Oct. 4 to Nov. 2, although O'Bradaigh is on bye the first couple of weeks. That will be followed by the National Championships, Dec. 14-21, in Richmond, Virginia.
