Remembering JFK

Pic of Day: 1963 was a momentous and sad year in Ireland. The June visit by President John F. Kennedy was a cause for celebration and joy. Kennedy's assassination five months later was cause for sadness and mourning. The last salute to JFK at his gravesite came from a contingent of Irish Army officer cadets. Some of those long ago soldiers gathered recently at EPIC, the Irish Emigration Museum, in Dublin which has been running an exhibition marking JFK's triumphant visit to the island of his ancestors. Among those pictured are Michael McGrath, fourth from left. McGrath was one of the honor guard of cadets and he told his story to the Irish Echo some years ago. Also included in the photo are Tánaiste and Minister for Defence Micheál Martin (third from left) and U.S. Ambassador to Ireland Claire Cronin (second from right). Photo courtesy of EPIC.
