Hibernians Brief Rep. Torres on Legacy Bill

Congressman Ritchie Torres recently met with a delegation of Hibernians for a briefing on legacy justice.

The AOH delegation included National Freedom for All Ireland Chair Martin Galvin, New York State Deputy Political Education Director Bob Nolan, and Division 3 member Joseph McManus, all Bronx residents and constituents.

The congressman, a Democrat who represents New York’s 15th Congressional District located in the Bronx, has, according to an AOH release, become deeply interested in Irish issues including legacy justice and has already joined a number of congressional sign-on letters opposing the British Northern Ireland Troubles (Legacy and Reconciliation) Bill.

Congressman Torres was especially interested in the case of Liam Ryan, a Tyrone born former Bronx resident and American citizen who was murdered after he returned Tyrone by off-duty members of the Ulster Defense Regiment on November 29, 1989.

The congressman also expressed his willingness to raise Irish issues with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and ranking member on House Foreign Affairs Committee Gregory Meeks, while emphasizing that congressional support on Irish issues should always be bipartisan.
