Governor Maura Healey Addresses Seanad Eireann

Pic of Day: Governor Maura Healey of Massachusetts (pictured) is today, Tuesday, addressing Seanad Éireann. The address follows an invitation by the Cathaoirleach of Seanad Éireann, Senator Jerry Buttimer.  Governor Healey’s paternal grandparents were from Kilgarvan in County Kerry and Macroom in County Cork and her maternal grandmother was a native of Ballinasloe, County Galway. Speaking ahead of the address, Senator Buttimer said: “We are delighted Governor Healey has accepted my invitation to address the Seanad during Pride month. Her address also coincides with the 30th anniversary of the decriminalisation of homosexuality in Ireland and sends a powerful message to young LGBTQI+ people who aspire to public office or indeed any role. As the first openly lesbian Governor of Massachusetts, her address is a timely opportunity to build on the strong bonds that have always marked the relationship between our two nations – and both Massachusetts and Ireland which have strong historical connections. While great strides have been made in securing LGBTQI+ rights, we must also address the ongoing challenges faced by LGBTQI+ communities in Ireland and the United States.”
