To the surprise of few, Long Island Democrats have chosen former congressman Tom Suozzi to contest the special election in New York's 3rd congressional district.
The election will take place on February 13 and follows the ouster from Congress of Republican George Santos.
The district covers a swathe of Long Island and Queens and much of it is familiar territory to Suozzi stemming from his time as congressman for a previous version of the district.
Suozzi is generally viewed as being a centrist who, in the past, was not shy when it came to sometimes criticizing his own party.
New York’s 3rd District is a classic battleground seat that is set to attract big spending from both parties and their allied super PACs. Although the boundaries after redistricting make it slightly less favorable for Democrats, voters in the district favored Biden over Donald Trump in 2020 by a margin of 8 percentage points, the Huffington Post was reporting.
During his time in the House of Representatives Suozzi was active on issues of Irish American concern. In recent times he has made appearances at a number of Irish American events, including a gathering in Manhattan in honor of Congressman Richie Neal and the recent Bronx AOH awards event at Rory Dolan's in Yonkers.
