Endurance Found

Pic of Day: The Endurance, the legendary ship that sank to the bottom of the Weddell Sea in 1915, has been found virtually intact 10,000 feet beneath the surface. The Norwegian-built wooden hulled ship was home to an Antarctic exploration team headed by Kildare-born Ernest Shackleton. The Endurance became stuck in ice and forced Shackleton to evacuate his crew to Elephant Island. From there Shackleton set sail with some of his crew on an open boat and covered 800 miles to South Georgia from where a rescue mission was launched for those still on Elephant Island. One of the leading members of Shackleton's team was Kerry-born Tom Crean. This iconic photo, which has been colorized, was taken by Australian photographer Frank Hurley.
