McCarthy stars in Felician win

Whoa! Did anybody see this coming?

Felician’s Sean McCarthy torched the twine for 41 points in last Monday’s 95-86 win over the College of Staten Island in Rutherford, N.J. in men’s basketball. The 6-6 sophomore from Cork launched 22 field goal attempts, cashing in on 15 of those (two of four from MetLife Stadium) and nine of 10 free throws. He’d scored only 27 points through the Golden Falcons first eight games until turned loose for 18 and 19 points in losses to Pace and Fairmont State, respectively. He also got credit for seven rebounds and a game-high four steals. Felician is now 4-7.

Lafayette dragged a 1-11 record down to Philadelphia for Wednesday’s encounter with La Salle (5-6) as if encumbered in much the same fashion as Jacob Marley’s ghost. Surprise, surprise. The Leopards stunned the Explorers, 90-65, led by C.J. Fulton, who scored a game-high 20 points. The 6-2 sophomore guard from Belfast shot 77 percent from the floor (7-for-9), mostly from Rocky Balboa’s shadow at the Art Museum, where he drilled six of eight attempts. He showed that he could giveth as well as taketh with a game-high six assists. Five boards completed a well-rounded 35 minutes on the hardwood.

Jamie Muldowney shot 3-for-4 from three-point land to put nine points on the board for Coker in last Monday’s 80-70 win at home over Converse. He is a 6-7 freshman from County Laois. The Cobras are 8-5.
