Maguire sisters score 10 apiece as Huskies win at home

 Duke had their Maguire sisters (Leona and Lisa) on the golf links, while Houston Christian’s women’s basketball features another pair of Maguires out of Belfast. They both scored 10 points as the Huskies defeated St. Thomas (Tex.), 68-43, at home on Saturday. Enya Maguire, a 5-4 junior, shot 4-for-6 from the field, including 2-for-3 from three-point territory. She also had four assists and two steals. Erin Maguire, a 5-7 freshman, got hers by shooting 4-for-8 from the floor, including 2-for-6 from outside the arc. She also got credit for three assists and two steals. The Huskies are 5-4.

  Abigail Rafferty scored a game-high 11 points to lead DeSales past Misericordia, 56-29, in Center Valley, Pa. on Saturday. The 6-1 junior from Dungannon, Co. Tyrone also accounted for eight rebounds, six assists and three steals. On Wednesday, DeSales ran roughshod over Wilkes, 57-36, at home. Rafferty had a game-high five assists and a team-high eight boards. She also chipped in six points. DeSales is 8-0.

 Lucy Coogan provided Caldwell with a spark off the bench, scoring a career-high 18 points in Caldwell’s 68-57 loss to visiting Felician last Tuesday. The 6-foot freshman from Kilkenny sliced the net on seven of 14 field goal attempts, including three of seven launched from Bloomfield Avenue, and one of four foul shots. She also got credit for five rebounds and a game-high three blocks. The Cougars are on the prowl at 3-5.

 Bronagh Power-Cassidy tossed in a game-high 17 points to lead Holy Cross past Stonehill, 74-62, in Worcester, Mass. on Thursday. The 5-10 sophomore out of Dublin made eight of 13 shots from the floor, including one of three from long range. The Crusaders are 8-2.

Ella O’Donnell continues to keep Quinnipiac’s rivals honest under the boards. The 6-3 freshman out of Shankill, Co. Dublin, took possession of 11 caroms in the Bobcats’ 75-59 victory at home over Yale on Wednesday and had nine in Sunday’s 63-55 home loss to Rhode Island. Both were team highs. She also earned credit for three assists and three steals in both games. Quinnipiac is 5-3.

 Nine was the operative number for Katie Williamson in Southern Connecticut State’s 80-66 victory over Adelphi in Garden City, N.Y. last Tuesday. The 6-1 junior from Dublin made four of 11 field goal attempts as well as one of two free throws for nine points. She also had nine boards as the Owls are hooting at 6-2.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Lafayette continues to struggle, dropping two games last week to fall to 1-10 on the season. Sophomore C.J. Fulton scored a team-high 16 points in Tuesday’s 69-56 road loss to Princeton. The 6-2 guard out of Belfast shot 6-for-10 from the floor, including 1-for-3 from Nassau Street, and drained all three of his free throws. His eight rebounds were a team high and his three assists were co-high for the Leopards.

            James Beckom pulled down a game-high eight rebounds as John Brown University fell to Southwestern Assembly of God, 76-70, in Siloam Springs, Ark. on Saturday. The 6-3 senior from Cork chipped in eight points on 2-of-8 shooting from the floor, including 1-of-2 air mailed, and 3-of-4 at the foul line. His three steals were a team high. The Golden Eagles are 3-9.

            James Thomas Phelan scored 12 points for Thomas (Maine) in Tuesday’s 77-68 loss to Eastern Nazarene in Quincy, Mass. A 6-3 freshman from Portlaoise, Co. Laois, Phelan made four of seven shots from the floor, including two of four from deep water, and both his free throws. He also had a team-high three assists as the Terriers fell to 3-7.

            Jamie Muldowney put eight points on the scoreboard for Coker in Sunday's 80-79 road loss to Wingate. The 6-7 freshman from County Laois connected on four of six field goal attempts and wrestled down five rebounds. The Cobras are 5-5.

            Rick Pitino put Silas Sunday in for only two minutes in Iona’s 84-62 thrashing of visiting St. Louis last Tuesday, but the 7-footer from Lucan, Dublin, got off three shots from the floor, of which he made two for four points. The Gaels are 6-2.

SQUASH

            Columbia swept Williams, 9-0, in New York on Friday. Belfast senior Ellie McVeigh was tasked with handling Deena Iqbal at sixth singles, which she did, 11-4, 11-7, 11-7.
