Ireland through to World Cup 2023 in Australia/New Zealand

Amber Barrett watches as her shot goes past Scotland’s goalkeeper this evening. The 72nd minute goal, the only one of the game, was enough to put the Republic of Ireland National Women’s Football Team into next year’s World Cup, which will be played in Australia and New Zealand in July and August. Vera Pauw's side learned before kickoff that a Portuguese 4-1 victory over Iceland earlier in the day meant that they could qualify directly for the tournament next summer if they won this evening's playoff. Although the home side dominated possession at Hampden Park in Glasgow, the Irish pluckily held on for an historic first trip to the women's soccer World Cup. INPHO/RYAN BYRNE
