The first heavy snowfall of the winter blanketed New York City and the surrounding region Friday morning, slowing the traffic and trains and prompting some flight cancelations. By 7 a.m., a reported 5.5 inches had fallen in Manhattan’s Central Park (the south side of the park opposite the Plaza Hotel is pictured at 6:15 a.m.) and 8.4 inches were recorded at LaGuardia Airport in Queens.
