The Yeats poem “Nineteen Hundred and Nineteen” has inspired an eponymous art exhibit a hundred years later.

An art exhibit that draws its inspiration from a Yeats poem and is entitled “Nineteen Hundred and Nineteen” will be opened at the Irish Consulate in Manhattan on Wednesday September 25th by Ciarán Cannon, Minister of State at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade with special responsibility for the Diaspora and International Development.
The exhibit, according to a release, “will be a significant cultural celebration, showcasing the vibrancy and depth of contemporary Ireland’s artistic engagement with the challenges of our political, social and heritage.
“At the same time the exhibition will form a fascinating insight and discussion piece for all those engaging economically, socially and culturally with the Irish diplomatic mission and its work in New York and the U.S. over the coming months.”
The “Nineteen Hundred and Nineteen” exhibition, curated by the Hamilton Gallery in Sligo, features art works by 129 artists themed around the poem by W B Yeats of the same name.
It was opened in July by Ireland’s Ambassador to the U.S., Daniel Mulhall, as part of the celebrations surrounding Sligo’s 60th Yeats International Summer School.
“In association with Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade the exhibitions are beginning to be deployed with increasing frequency as part of the cultural showcasing of Ireland through the country’s diplomatic missions abroad,” added the release announcing the New York unveiling.
