Call it the WTF effect, as Puttin’ on Your Shorts has become Puttin’ on Her Shorts -- at least for Thursday, Saturday and Sunday of this week. The annual Bronx Irish theatre festival of new short plays is acknowledging that the Waking the Feminists movement has changed the conversation. Poor Mouth Theatre Company co-founder Don Creedon told the Echo a couple of weeks back: “Hopefully, our festival can be seen as part of a sustained policy for inclusion going forward.”
This year’s plays have been penned by six women. The work of Honor Molloy, fresh from the success of the second run of her “Crackskull Row” at the Irish Repertory Theatre, will be performed along with that of Brona Crehan, Maeve Price, Olivia Reevell, Allison Sylvia and Amy E. Witting.
“The problem is not that no one is doing women’s plays,” added the Dubliner Creedon, “it’s that when they are produced they are usually performed in smaller spaces at smaller theatres like ours.”
That venue, since the company was launched in 2010, has been An Beal Bocht Café, 445 West 238th St., Bronx, NY 10463. This year’s festival performance will be tomorrow Thursday, March 30, at 8 p.m., Saturday, also at 8 p.m., and Sunday at 2 p.m.
