IRELAND appears to have found another young outstanding golfer in 17-year-old Gavin Moynihan.
Moynihan, a pupil at Malahide Community School and a member of the Island
Golf Club, added to his growing reputation by winning the Irish Strokeplay Championship in windswept conditions at Royal Dublin last weekend. He finished one shot clear of Dutch international Robin Kind.
In capturing the Irish Strokeplay championship, he was following in the footsteps of Padraig Harrington and South Africa's Louis Oosthuizen. The high winds which gusted over 40 mph on occasions, made low scoring impossible.
So Moynihan had to grind out rounds of 76 and 75 on the final day to see off a strong field. His plan now is to take up a U.S. golf scholarship after he finishes his Leaving Certificate next year.
