The County Cork Association of New York recently held its 100th anniversary Titanic commemoration and fundraising event at the Cork Hall, Long Island City, Queens. The event memorialized the Irish passengers who boarded the Titanic at Cobh/Queenstown. Approximately seventy five percent of them were lost in the sinking
Heading the line up of speakers at the event was Speaker Christine Quinn, whose grandmother, Ellen Shine from Newmarket, Co. Cork was one of the survivors. The mayor of Cobh, James Quinlan, detailed the year-long series of events which the Cobh Titanic 100 Committee is undertaking. He spoke on the effort by Cobh Town Council to develop a Titanic Memorial Park and to erect a glass wall memorial.
It is envisaged that looking through the glass wall will create a simulation of the ship as it lay at anchor off Roche's Point 100 years ago. On the memorial will be etched the names of all passengers who boarded the Titanic in Cobh/Queenstown.
Dr. Miriam Nyhan of NYU's Glucksman Ireland House also spoke at the gathering while the main speaker was Dr. Michael Martin, author and historian, founder of the Titanic Trail in Cobh, and acknowledged global expert on the Titanic.
