Selfridge named MAC Freshman of the Year

Toledo’s Chris Selfridge claimed third place in the Mid-American Conference Men’s Golf Championship at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill. Selfridge, a freshman from Belfast, finished the event one stroke under par at 215 (73-71-71), leaving a 6-stroke gap between him and Kent State’s Corey Connors, the medalist. Selfridge was named the MAC Freshman of the Year as a result of his performance. Teammate Jamie Richardson, a freshman from Ballyclare, Co. Antrim, finished joint-33rd at 233 (77-80-76). Toledo took sixth place among the nine teams competing.

Seton Hall’s Gary Dunne finished joint-seventh in the Big East Men’s Championship at Reunion Resort in Orlando, Fla. Dunne, a sophomore from Co. Wicklow, was one of only four golfers to break 70 in the third and final round; he shot 69 then on the heels of 72 and 74. His aggregate 215 left him one stroke under par for the event and five off the winning score posted by Notre Dame’s Max Scodro. Seton Hall finished seventh in the 12-team field, with Notre Dame claiming the team title.

TRACK & FIELD

Rhode Island’s Kalyn Sheehan, a senior from Waterford, won the women’s 100-meter hurdles for the second year in a row at the Atlantic 10 Conference Championships in Amherst, Mass. She had a winning time of 13.91. Sheehan also got fifth place in the 400-meter hurdles, posting a 1:01.23 clocking in a race won by Duquesne’s Nicole Cherok in 59.91.

Iona’s Jake Byrne won the men’s 1,500 meters at the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships in Lawrenceville, N.J. The freshman from Mullingar, Co. Westmeath unleashed a winning run of 3:51.67. Teammate Craig Murphy got second place in the 5,000 meters. His 14:29.38 was bettered only by teammate Alexander Soderberg, who broke the tape in 14:11.28. Murphy is a junior from Cork.

Bryant’s Eimear Black got fifth place in the women’s 5,000 meters at the Northeast Conference Championships in Emmitsburg, Md. Her time was 17:53.78 in a race won in 17:06.46 by Monmouth’s Jennifer Nelson. Black is a sophomore from Glengormley, Co. Antrim.

Brown’s Kevin Cooper, a junior from Waterford, finished seventh in the men’s 1,500 meters at the Heptagonal Championships in Philadelphia on Sunday. His time was 4:05.19 in a race won by Columbia’s Kyle Merber in 4:02.85.
