Florida State's O'Neill wins 10K at ACC meet

Florida State senior Breanden O'Neill of Sandymount Dublin won the men's 10,000 meters at the Atlantic Coast Conference Track & Field Champion­ships in Charlottesville, Va. O'Neill ran a winning time of 29:30.00. He also took fifth place in the 5,000-meter run; he posted a time of 14:11.12 in a race won by Virginia Tech's William Mulherin in 14:03.26. Florida State took second place in the team standings; their 149 team points were eclipsed only by Virginia Tech's 153.5.

Rhode Island's Kalyn Sheehan led off for the Rams' winning entry in the 4x100 meter relay at the Larry Ellis Invitational in Princeton, N.J. The Waterford senior and her three confederates got the job done in 45.81, with the next finishers in at 46.12. Sheehan also got seventh place in the 100-meter hurdles, which she ran in 14.25. West Virginia's Chelsea Carrier-Eades ran a winning 13.53. Seventh place seemed to agree with Sheehan, who finished there in the 400-meter hurdles, with a 1:00.47 clocking. Latosha Wallace, unaffiliated, was the winner in 56.47.

Stony Brook's Mary O'Connor was the third finisher at 800 meters. The Waterford senior was in at 2:11.56; West Virginia's Jenna Barreto broke the tape in 2:11.22. Stony Brook's Lorraine McCarthy got fourth place in the 1,500 meters at the Larry Ellis. Her time was 4:35.96 in a race won by East Carolina's Brooke Kott in 4:27.49. McCarthy is a junior from Waterford.

Also in Princeton, St. John's Claire Mooney, a freshman from Celbridge, Co. Kildare had the 11th best time of 36 runners in the women's 400 meters. She was in at 56.25, with Sophia Smellie, unaffiliated, running a winning 52.38.

GOLF

University of Toledo freshman Chris Selfridge took sixth place in the 81-man field at the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate, played over Ohio State's Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio. Selfridge, a Belfast resident, shot the second-round low score of 71. He sandwiched that with rounds of 79 and 74 to finish the 54-hole event 11 strokes over par at 224. Medal honors went to Max Buckley of Southern Methodist, who shot 220.

Alabama's Stephanie Meadow tied for 12th place in the Southeastern Conference Championship at Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark. The sophomore from Jordanstown, Co. Antrim shot 14-over-par 230 (71-79-80) in difficult conditions. Only one golfer broke par over the final two rounds. Auburn's Patricia Sanz shot 219 for the victory. Auburn also took the team title by one stroke, with Alabama five back in third place.

Denver's Sarah Faller finished joint-17th in the Sun Belt Conference Championship at The Shoals in Muscle Shoals, Ala. Faller, a senior from Galway, put rounds of 75, 81 and 73 on her scorecards to finish 13 strokes over par at 229. The low score of 215 was shared by teammate Rachael Watton and Florida International's Katie Mundy. Denver won the team title by 17 strokes.

North Florida's Kevin Phelan shared 22nd place at the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship at Chateau Elan in Braselton, Ga. The junior from Waterford finished the event 13 strokes over par at 229 (73-76-80) and 16 behind Stetson's Sam Ryder, the medalist. North Florida took the team championship by four strokes over East Tennessee State.

Carson-Newman's Liam Ashby tied for 22nd place in the South Atlantic Conference Championship at the Rock Barn in Conover, N.C. The Dublin senior was 15 strokes over par for 54 holes at 231 (76-80-75) and 16 off the winning score posted by Newberry's Matthew Campbell.

TENNIS

Notre Dame got third place in the Big East Championships, held in Tampa, Fla. Niall Fitzgerald, a senior from Co. Wicklow, defeated Villanova's Mike Rosengren, 6-1, 6-2, at fourth singles for the clinching point in the first round, a 5-0 win for the Fighting Irish. Fitzgerald and Casey Watt also worked out an 8-4 win over Thomas O'Brien and Kelly Donaldson at first doubles. Notre Dame then got bounced out of the championship bracket by South Florida, 4-3. Fitzgerald registered a 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 victory at fifth singles over Ravi Patel. Fitzgerald and Watt were ahead in their doubles match when the clinching point was scored on another court. Notre Dame then got third place with a 4-1 triumph over St. John's. Fitzgerald scored a 6-4, 6-4 win over Mike Lampa at fifth singles.

John Morrissey helped Stanford to a 5-2 win over California. The Dublin freshman defeated Christoffer Konigsfeldt, 6-4, 6-3, at fourth singles and teamed with Bradley Klahn at second doubles to take out Carlos Cueto and Ben McLachlan, 8-5. Arizona swept Arizona State, 7-0, with Dublin sophomore Susan McRann earning a 6-2, 6-3 victory at fifth singles over Leighann Sahagun.
