Waterford star John Mullane says that he is taking a break for the early part of the National Hurling League, but he hopes to be back in time for the Munster championship. The 31-year-old De La Salle star believes that by shortening his competitive season he can prolong his intercounty career.
Mullane has two young children and he says that there aren't enough hours in the day to be able to everything that he wants to do. ''I had it handy last year as my wife Stephanie was on maternity leave and I had plenty of time to train. Now I leave the house at 7 a.m. and collect the children at 3.30 p.m., try to keep them entertained for a few hours until Stephanie comes in and then it's straight out the door to training. Our new manager Michael Ryan has given me permission to change the training program to suit myself. All the training and weights session are a colossal commitment, but people don't see that, they only see you when they go to a game; they don't see what goes on behind the scenes.''
