Trawler sinks, five missing

A massive search in poor weather conditions is continuing today off the County Cork coast, this after a trawler went down in stormy seas on Sunday. Five men remained missing at presstime Tuesday.

The Irish Naval Service is aware of the location where the trawler Tit Bonhommme went down but heavy seas have prevented divers from reaching it.

As the search for the missing continued, relatives kept vigil on the pier in the village of Union Hall.

In a statement, the Naval Service said it was deeply conscious of the families and friends of the missing men and the wider fishing community and will begin diving on the wreck as soon as safe diving conditions prevail.

The trawler, captained by Michael Hayes (52), foundered after striking rocks in heavy seas.

Seventeen local fishing boats, along with the Baltimore and Courtmacsherry lifeboats, Irish Coastguard helicopters, gardaí and around 100 civil defense and coastguard volunteers have been taking part in the search.
