A grandson of former Irish leader Eamon de Valera has been appointed the new deputy leader of Fianna Fáil, succeeding the late Brian Lenihan in the post.
Galway West TD Eamon O Cuiv was appointed to the post by party leader Micheál Martin, one of three frontbench selections made this past weekend by Martin.
Deputy O Cuiv, who has been a TD since 1992, has previously served as minister for the environment, defense, social protection, community and state in various Fianna Fáil governments.
Mr. Martin also announced that Michael McGrath, his running mate in the Cork South Central constituency, will take over as the party's finance spokesman.Meanwhile, Sean Fleming, TD for Laois-Offaly, has been appointed public expenditure and public sector reform spokesman.
Martin said the changes reflected the work done by the three TDs since the death of Mr. Lenihan in June.
"I am confident all three will provide a robust and constructive challenge to the government in the next term of the Dáil, in addition to strong leadership within the Fianna Fáil party, as we work to renew the organization across the country," he said.
