Life on the edge isn't a gimme

By Irish Echo Staff

U2 have famously lived along the coastline of South County Dublin but lately the band's lead guitarist, Dave Evans, better known as The Edge, has taken to the canyon-rutted coastline of Malibu, just north of Los Angeles.

But living on the edge of things can be tricky as Edge has found out. The California Coastal Commission, effectively the local planning board, has turned down a proposal to build five mansions on the Malibu coastline, one of which would be owned by Evans.

The commission's 8-to-4 vote came after four years of back and forth negotiations. Now, according to reports, both sides might be heading for court.

The rejection came despite the fact that the five homes, measuring more than 7,000 square feet apiece, have been designed to accommodate green technology in just about every way, including solar panels and a system to catch rainwater.

One major concern of those individuals and groups opposing the project was the necessary road linking the houses with main highways in the area.

Evans and the other four property owners submitted separate proposals to the commission, but none passed muster.
