Australia drowning victim flown home

The body of an Irishwoman who died while scuba-diving in Australia two weeks ago has been returned to Ireland. Elaine Morrow's remains arrived at Dublin airport Tuesday and were taken to her home in County Donegal. Her funeral will be held tin her hometown of Ballintra.

The 23-year-old was scuba-diving in Queensland on April 18 when she became separated from a team of three divers and an instructor. After she failed to resurface, divers returned to the ocean floor, where they found her.

Police said attempts to revive the biology graduate, who had only entered the country several weeks earlier on a year's visa, were unsuccessful and she was pronounced dead at Hayman Island medical centre in the Whitsunday Islands.

Morrow's family have been told it could be months before completion of an investigation into the drowning takes place by Australian safety officials and police in Queensland.

The deceased was on a three-day chartered boat trip with friends when she joined 12 other tourists on the scuba diving expedition. Former classmates living in Australia helped make arrangements for her body to be returned home.

Morrow died on the same date as her grandfather, who died aged 80 two years ago. Her funeral service will be in the same church where his took place.
