Man in court after arms find

A man arrested in the wake of the murder of Catholic PSNI officer Ronan Kerr has appeared in court accused of terror related offences.

Gavin Coyle (33) from Culmore Road in Omagh, County Tyrone was charged with possession of firearms and explosives with intent to endanger life and possession of articles likely to be of use in terrorism.

His arrest followed a major arms find in Coalisland just days after Ronan Kerr's murder in Omagh.

In Dungannon Magistrates Court, a senior police officer told District Judge Barney McElhome that a footwear expert had linked a print found at the lock-up garages where the weapons were found with one taken from the house of the accused.

Also this week, three men have been charged with terrorist offences linked to dissident republican activity after the discovery of a "substantial amount" of guns and ammunition in South Armagh in a joint PSNI/Garda operation.

Appearing in court in Newry were Brian Anthony Sheridan, 34, from Avonmore, Blackwatertown; Brian Francis Cavlan, 35, Circular Road, Dungannon; and 39-year-old Dominic Edward Dynes, from Bree, Castleblaney, County Monaghan.

All three were remanded in custody until next month.

A detective sergeant told the court he could connect the accused to the charges.

He said Dynes replied when charged that "he was told to bury the weapons found in the car that he was driving and he had no intent to use them at any time to shoot or kill anybody, carry out any robbery or any show of strength."

The other defendants made similar statements.
