Former Irish president Mary Robinson's son is one of the main organizers behind the Occupy Dublin protest.
Aubrey Robinson, 30, is among a group of people who have been camping outside the Central Bank in the city in recent weeks, echoing demonstrations that have swept the United States and the rest of the globe.
Robinson, a photographer and filmmaker who is one of the former president's three children, is camping out with other protesters in a bid to highlight "corporate corruption" and to keep the International Monetary Fund and European Central Bank out of Irish affairs.
According to Dublin City Council, the area "occupied" is outside its jurisdiction, as it is clear of the public sidewalk. While the council confirmed it has received one complaint from a business located close to the bank, it maintains it is not in a position to act against the group.
"As it is private property, Dublin City Council has no authority to move these people," a spokesperson said.
"The camp is located on property belonging to the bank and as such it is a matter between the bank and the garda."
Gardai have said that while they continue to monitor the area, no incidents of unlawful behavior have been reported, with the protestors being "well behaved" according to a spokesperson.
According to a spokesperson for the camp, the aim is to provide a platform for discussion out of which they hope a consensus will eventually arise. What has been agreed so far is the current global capitalist system is "not working" and "a new way forward" needs to be found.
The spokesperson added that a decision had been made not to provide names during interviews so as to avoid the perception that the group had a leader or spokesperson.
Similar "occupy" protests have sprung up in Galway, Waterford and Cork.
