Sarah Ellen Cullen died recently in New York at the age of 101.
Born in Minkeeragh, Glenfarne, County Leitrim, she arrived in the U.S. in 1927. With an interest in the field that she loved, Sarah obtained her registered nurse diploma in 1943 followed by a bachelor's degree from Hunter College in 1946.
While working for the New York Health and Hospitals Corporation, Sarah she received a Masters Degree from New York University in 1961. She was a longtime member of the Leitrim Society and the Hunter College Alumni Association.
She was also the last surviving of 14 siblings and is survived by numerous nephews and nieces throughout the U.S., Ireland, England, Germany, Switzerland and Australia. According to her family, Sarah was a loving and generous aunt who would "slip a $20 now and then" and was also most appreciative and grateful to her friend, Hyacinth.
Interment took place at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Contributions in Sarah Cullen's memory can be made to Most Precious Blood Church, 32-23 36th St., Long Island City, NY 11106.
