Just as many were writing off the chances of comprehensive immigration reform this year, there are stirrings this week in the U.S. Senate.
Majority leader Harry Reid is to attach the bipartisan "Dream Act" next week to the Defense Authorization Bill, and New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez has indicated that he is ready to introduce a comprehensive immigration reform on the Senate floor.
The Menendez move will follow Reid's initiative according to reports, although no date has been specified. Congress is back in session after the August break and is expected to sit until around the end of October when it will adjourn for the midterm elections.
The Dream Act allows for a path to legalization for people who came to the Untied States as children and who, despite being illegal, have excelled in education. It requires the qualifying individual to study in college, or serve in the U.S. armed forces.
