St. Patrick's Day Memories: John Murphy

St. Patrick's Day 1998, NYPD post-Parade gathering: Raising a glass along with those of several hundred of New York's Finest as the pipes and drums played "Amazing Grace" in honor of the officers killed in the line of duty that year. Made the hair stand on the back of my neck! Have you ever marched in the New York City St. Patrick's Day Parade? I'm embarrassed to say I never officially marched, but I did jump in one year and march a few blocks behind the Wexford banner. Am hoping to get IN-NYC into the parade soon. It's tough to get in! Five essential Irish albums that should be part of everyone's music library: Rum Sodomy & The Lash By The Pogues; Boil the Breakfast Early by The Chieftains; The Joshua Tree by U2; The Best of Thin Lizzy by Thin Lizzy; Tom Dunne's 30 Best Irish Hits by Tom Dunne. How much green do you wear on March 17th? A respectable amount. Do you eat corned beef & cabbage on St. Patrick's Day? How about soda bread? If there is any left by the time I get to the pubs, for sure - the bacon, cabbage and the soda bread. It's terrific for the soakage. Favorite Irish film? "The Wind That Shakes The Barley." Favorite Irish book? Brendan Behan's "Borstal Boy." Favorite Irish song? I'm a Wexford man so it has to be "Boulavogue." Complete this sentence: The most Irish thing about me is . . . I'm the ninth of eleven kids?
