The Irish government's Central Statistics Office has calculated that overseas visits to Ireland fell by 881,200, or 12 percent, in the first 11 months of 2009 when compared to the same period in 2008.
This would indicate a full year drop of about a million.
The biggest fall off was in visitors from Britain and this was followed by those from Europe. The least noticeable decline was in visitors from the U.S. There were 24,500 fewer of those over the 11 months, a relatively small decline of 2.6 percent.
