The Dow Jones broke the 10,000 mark today for the first time in a year. Do you think this is a sign that the recession is over?
I think it's a positive sign, but companies are showing profits right now because they've cut production and salaries and laid off huge numbers of workers. The real proof will be when they start hiring again.

The Dow reaching 10K means nothing. When jobs start coming back then the recession is over. Unemployment is about to hit double digits so no matter how they try to spin it...we're in a depression for at least another year.

It's a blip on the radar screen.

Dow Jones may have passed the 10,000 mark but until unemployment lowers, the country can't be said to be out of the recession.

Jobless Recovery so far. Production is up even with less workers so bosses have no reason to hire. No matter what industry ie; building, printing, etc. Companies are running with less workers sometimes creating unsafe working conditions & certainly unsafe conditions for workers who are doing 12 hr. shifts with not enough time for sleep let alone family. Unsafe work places unsafe drivers on the road. Overstressed families.

No. We need to see between 12,000 and 13,000.

The profits these companies are showing are not the result of increased sales but rather then cuts/savings measures. Tell the 10% unemployed people that the recession is over. Ask them what they think.

It is impossible, in my opinion, for any rational analyst to view ths brief upturn in the stock market as a sign of long term economic health. One only need take a quick look at the rate that this administration is pling up our national debt to grow . For those who don't understand these macro-economic issues, I would simpy say that it is no diffrent than managing your very own household finances. If you overspend and run up too much debt, you will be in a weak financial condition. God bless America.
