On this day forty years ago the British Ambassador to Ireland, Christopher Ewart-Biggs died when an IRA land mine exploded as he was being driven in his car near his South County Dublin residence. Ewart-Biggs, 55, and civil servant Judith Cooke, who was 26, were killed. Driver Brian O'Driscoll and a third passenger, Northern Ireland civil servant, Brian Cubbon, were injured.
