All-star night to honor ‘Ashes’

Best-selling Irish novelist Joseph O’Connor will host an all-star cast in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the publication of Frank McCourt’s “Angela’s Ashes” on Sunday evening, June 26.

Those performing at the Sheen Center, 18 Bleecker St, New York City, (beginning at 7 p.m.) include step-dancer and choreographer Jean Butler, actress Lisa Dwan, actor Gabriel Byrne, former Poet Laureate Billy Collins, comedian and writer Maeve Higgins, Irish Consul General Barbara Jones, Black 47 lead singer Larry Kirwan, Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Paul Muldoon, singer-songwriter Pierce Turner, novelist and essayist Peter Quinn and Irish Repertory Theatre founders Charlotte Moore and Ciaran O’Reilly. Among those on stage who had a close association with McCourt will be his widow Ellen, his brothers Malachy and Alphie, bestselling memoirist Elena Gorokhova (a former student), Molly Friedrich (his agent) and Nan Graham (his publisher).

Proceeds will go to support of the inaugural UL/Frank McCourt Creative Writing Summer School at Glucksman Ireland House NYU, which is being led by Professor O’Connor, who is Frank McCourt Chair of Creative Writing, University of Limerick.

The event is supported by American Irish Historical Society, Consulate General of Ireland, Glucksman Ireland House NYU, Irish American Writers & Artists, Irish Arts Center, Irish Repertory Theatre, and Symphony Space.
