Providence's McCarthy comes 2nd in Amherst

Providence College senior David McCarthy finished second in the NCAA Division 1 Men's Northeast Cross Country Regional at Audubon Golf Course in Amherst, N.Y. on Saturday. McCarthy, a resident of Waterford, ran 10,000 meters in 31:13.1, a time that was bettered only by Iona's Leonard Korir, who finished in 31:10.4. Providence freshman Shane Quinn, also from Waterford, took 17th place; he finished in 31:47.8. Iona's Craig Murphy, a junior from Cork, was 47th to finish, with a 32:35.9 clocking. Finally, Brown's Kevin Cooper, a Waterford junior, finished in 107th place, timed in 33:32.9.

The Providence women's team also had a top-10 finisher in Amherst in the person of senior Charlotte Ffrench-O'Carroll. The Dubliner got seventh place, having completed 6,000 meters in 20:57.2. Stony Brook's Patricia Barry, a senior from Co. Tipperary, finished 23rd, with a time of 21:27.1, while teammate Lorraine McCarthy, a junior from Waterford, placed 110th, caught in 23:08.8. Dartmouth's Abbey D'Agostino was the race winner, timed in 20:25.3.

Florida State's Brendan O'Neill came in fourth in the Men's South Regional in Tuscaloosa, Ala. O'Neill, a senior from Sandymount, Dublin, ran 10,000 meters in 30:57.2. Teammate David Forrester's 30:43.3 was the winning time.

The Southeast Regional was held in Louisville, Ky., where Western Kentucky's Michelle Finn was 51st to finish. The Cork senior covered 6,000 meters in 21:40.6. Teammate Anna Reddin, a freshman from Sligo, placed 171st, caught by the clock in 23:21.4. North Carolina's Kendra Schaaf was the winner, with a time of 19:52.9.

On the Division 2 level, Arkansas Tech sophomore Cheryl Nolan, from Co. Carlow, finished 26th in the South Central Regional in Wichita Falls, Tex. Her time for 6,000 meters was 22:43.00. Abilene Christian's Chloe Susset was first in, timed in 21:37.90.
